Window film questions, answered

Clear answers on privacy, heat, UV, security and installation across Greater Montreal.

The basics

What is window film?

Window film is a thin polyester layer applied directly to your existing glass. Depending on the product, it cuts heat, glare and UV, adds privacy or strengthens the glass, without replacing the window.

Architectural films are engineered for homes and buildings, not cars. They combine ceramic, metal or stable pigment layers depending on the effect you need. Privé installs the XPEL Vision line across Greater Montreal, and we choose the film based on the problem in the room, not the other way around.

Tell us about your project

How does window film work?

Window film changes how light passes through glass. It can reduce solar heat, glare and UV, or change visibility to add privacy.

Solar film reflects and absorbs part of the sun's energy. Reflective film adds privacy when it is brighter outside than inside. Frosted film scatters light and obscures detail. We choose the combination that fits your needs, then confirm it is suitable for your windows.

Window film vs window tint: what's the difference?

People often say "tint," but it's the same thing: a film applied to the glass. The difference is that most architectural films aren't dark at all.

"Tint" makes people think of a blacked-out car window. Modern residential and commercial films can stay nearly invisible while blocking heat and UV. Others are reflective, frosted or opaque depending on the need. The right choice depends on what you're trying to fix: heat, privacy, glare or security.

Tell us about your project

Is home window film the same as car tint?

No. Architectural films are designed for building glass, large panes and double-pane units, with different adhesives and performance than automotive films.

Home glass reacts to heat differently than car glass, especially sealed double-pane units. An architectural film accounts for how much heat the glass absorbs to avoid thermal stress breakage. That's why we assess your glass type before recommending a film.

Tell us about your project

What types of window film are there?

The main families are solar (heat and UV), privacy (reflective or dark), decorative (frosted, white or opaque), safety and security, anti-graffiti, bird-safe and low-E for winter.

Many films combine effects. For example, a reflective film cuts heat and adds daytime privacy, and some security films also include solar control. There are also films made for the outside of the glass when an interior install isn't possible. We help you choose based on your room and your goal.

Tell us about your project

Does window film change how my windows look from outside?

It depends on the film. Clear solar films are nearly invisible, reflective films give a daytime mirror look and frosted films look like etched glass.

If the facade matters, for example in a condo or a commercial building, we can pick a low-reflectivity film. Some XPEL Vision films reflect only about 8% of visible light, close to ordinary glass. We bring samples so you see the result on your own glass.

Tell us about your project

Can I still see out through window film?

Yes, with most solar and reflective films the outside view stays clear. Only frosted, white or opaque films block the view, and that's the point of them.

The darker the film, the more the view is toned down, a bit like sunglasses. Clear films keep the view almost untouched. If your priority is privacy and you don't need to see out, frost is often the best option.

Tell us about your project

Is window film permanent?

Window film is designed to stay in place for years, but it can be removed or replaced if your needs change.

On glass in good condition, professional removal can generally restore the original glazing. We remove the film and adhesive residue using a method suited to the surface. You can change your privacy level or finish without replacing your windows.

Privacy

How do I stop people from seeing into my home?

Two main options: a frosted film, which blocks the view day and night while letting light through, or a reflective film, which keeps your view out and creates a daytime mirror effect.

The right choice comes down to one question: do you need to see out? If not, frost is the most reliable solution at any hour. If you do, a reflective film like XPEL's Clear View Alloy 40 keeps about 40% of the light and bounces part of the daylight back outside. We look at your window, its orientation and when you want privacy before recommending.

How can I get privacy without losing natural light?

Frosted film adds privacy while keeping a room bright. XPEL White Frost transmits about 65% of visible light and obscures detail through the glass.

Prefer to keep your view outside? Reflective film can provide daytime privacy, with light levels that vary by product. We show you the options on your glass so you can choose the right balance of light, view and privacy.

Does privacy window film work at night?

Frost does: it blocks the view day and night. Reflective film doesn't: the mirror effect works when it's brighter outside than inside, so it reverses in the evening when your lights are on.

This is the most important question to ask before choosing. For a bathroom, bedroom or ground floor window used in the evening, frost is usually the right choice. For a living room where privacy matters mostly during the day, a reflective film keeps the view, and a blind or curtain takes over at night.

Get a privacy solution

Reflective vs frosted privacy film: which should I choose?

Choose frosted film for privacy during the day and evening when the outside view is not essential. Choose reflective film to keep your view while limiting visibility into the room during daylight.

Frosted film works well for bathrooms and glass partitions. Reflective film can also reduce heat in a sunny room; at night, blinds or curtains take over for privacy. We show you both finishes on your window before you decide.

Get a privacy solution

Can window film let me see out without people seeing in?

Yes, during the day. A reflective film creates a one-way mirror effect: from outside people mostly see a reflection, while from inside you keep your view.

The effect depends on the light difference between inside and outside. The brighter it is outside, the stronger the effect. In the evening, when the inside is lit, it reverses. The more reflective the film, the stronger the mirror effect, and the more it reduces the light coming in.

What's the best privacy option for a ground floor or street-facing window?

For a window at sidewalk level, frosted film is often a good choice: it limits close-up views and continues to provide privacy when the lights are on in the evening.

Depending on the glass, we can treat the lower section or plan a band at eye level while leaving a clear view of the sky. A pattern can also work well on a storefront. Send us a photo of the window and the look you want, and we will recommend a suitable layout.

How do I get privacy in a condo facing another building?

A reflective film keeps your city view while limiting what the neighbours across can see during the day. For evenings, we pair it with blinds or frost certain sections.

In condo towers, floor to ceiling windows and close neighbours make privacy hard. Before installing a film that's visible from outside, check your condo declaration: some boards regulate how windows look. We can provide spec sheets and samples to bring to the board.

How do I add privacy to a bathroom window?

Frosted film adds bathroom privacy while letting daylight in. It goes directly onto your existing window and provides privacy during the day and evening.

We choose the finish and coverage based on the window's position, lighting and nearby sightlines. Some finishes can show a silhouette very close to the glass, so a sample helps confirm the effect before installation. Once installed, there is no blind to open or close each day.

Get a privacy solution

Can I put privacy film on just part of a window?

Yes. A frosted band or lower section can provide privacy while leaving part of the window clear.

We work out the height needed based on what passersby or neighbours can actually see. For exterior-facing windows, we also check that the product and partial coverage suit the glazing. Send us a photo and tell us where the unwanted views come from, and we will help you choose the right layout.

Privacy film or blinds: which is better?

Film gives you privacy without closing off the room: you keep the light and, with a reflective film, the view. Blinds are still useful for full darkness or complete privacy at night.

Many clients call us because they live with the blinds closed all day. Film fixes that: it works all the time, with no cords and no upkeep, and it also blocks heat and UV. In many cases the best setup combines both: film during the day, blinds at night.

Get a privacy solution

Will my windows look like mirrors from outside?

Only if you choose a highly reflective film. There are moderate options that give a light sheen without a strong mirror look.

The level of reflection is a choice. A film like Clear View Alloy 40 reflects about a third of the light back outside, while silver films go much further. If a mirror look bothers you, we show you samples right on your window before you decide.

Get a privacy solution

Can window film be installed on patio or sliding doors?

Yes. Patio doors are one of the most commonly treated glass surfaces, for privacy, heat or security.

Because they're usually a large pane facing the yard, patio doors let in a lot of heat and expose the inside to neighbours. Depending on your priority, we recommend a solar, reflective, partly frosted or security film. We also check the glass type before installing.

Frosted and decorative

What is frosted window film?

Frosted film gives glass an etched or sandblasted look. It blocks the view while letting light through.

It's used for bathrooms, windows facing neighbours, glass doors, meeting rooms and storefronts. It goes on your existing glass, which costs far less than replacing the pane with etched glass, and it can be removed later.

Get a frosted film quote

Does frosted film let light in?

Yes. XPEL White Frost transmits about 65% of visible light. It scatters light to create an etched-glass effect while obscuring detail on the other side.

It is a useful option for a bathroom, office or window facing neighbours when you want privacy without closing off the room with a blind. We show you a sample so you can judge the light level in your own space.

Get a frosted film quote

Does frosted film look like real sandblasted glass?

Yes. Frosted film creates an etched or sandblasted-glass look with an even finish on your existing glass.

The appearance depends on the finish: softer, whiter or more textured. The main advantage is achieving that look without replacing the pane, with the option to change the film later. We provide samples so you can choose the finish that suits your space.

Get a frosted film quote

Can frosted film be used on office glass walls and meeting rooms?

Yes. Frosted film makes offices and meeting rooms more private while preserving light through glass partitions.

We can plan full coverage or a band at eye level, depending on the privacy needed. A pattern can also make a large glass surface easier to notice. Send us photos or a plan of your partitions, and we will help you choose a layout that fits your office.

Get a frosted film quote

Can I add my logo or a pattern in frosted film?

A logo, bands or a pattern can be incorporated into a frosted finish to combine privacy with your brand's appearance.

Have an idea for a storefront, door or meeting room? Send us your artwork and a photo of the glass. We will review the layout, dimensions and available options with you to create a result that fits your space.

Is there a film that blocks light completely?

Yes. XPEL's Black Out film blocks all visible light, according to the manufacturer's spec sheet.

It's used for media rooms, bedrooms of night shift workers, technical rooms or storefronts that need to be hidden during renovations. For a window that should be opaque but still bright, frost or white out is usually a better fit.

White out or frost: which should I choose?

Frost (White Frost) lets about 65% of the light through, while White Out lets only about 9% through. Both block the view.

Frost fits when you want privacy and a bright room. White Out fits when you want to fully hide what's behind the glass, for example a storage room, technical room or empty storefront, while keeping a clean white look from outside. Both figures come from the XPEL spec sheet.

Heat and sun

How do I keep a room cool without closing the blinds?

Solar film reduces heat entering through windows while preserving your view and useful daylight. It can make a room more comfortable without keeping the blinds closed.

Some films are very clear, while others reduce more visible light to also control glare. We compare solar energy rejection and light transmission to choose a film that suits your room, its exposure and the existing glass.

Fix my heat problem

Why is one room in my house always hotter than the others?

Large windows exposed to the sun, especially south or west facing windows, can explain why one room gets much hotter than the others. If the temperature rises when sunlight hits the glass, solar film can make a real difference.

Insulation and airflow can also contribute. During the assessment, we look at where and when the discomfort occurs to determine what film can improve. The goal is a room you can enjoy using, even in the afternoon.

Fix my heat problem

How do I reduce heat from a south or west facing window?

Solar film suited to your glass reduces heat gain through south or west facing windows. We choose the performance level around the daylight and view you want to keep.

A darker tint is not the only way to reduce heat: some clear films also provide effective solar control. For a west facing window with strong glare, reducing more visible light may improve comfort. We show you the options on site so you can compare the effect.

Fix my heat problem

How much heat does window film block?

Depending on the product, XPEL Vision solar films reject from about 35% to nearly 90% of total solar energy, according to the manufacturer's spec sheet.

The number to look at is total solar energy rejected (TSER). The clearest films sit at the low end of the range and the darkest or most reflective at the high end. These values are measured by the manufacturer on 3 mm single glass; real results depend on your glass. We choose based on the balance you want between light and comfort.

Fix my heat problem

Will window film make my room darker?

Film reduces some light, but it does not necessarily make a room dark. Clear options help preserve brightness, while darker options suit rooms with excessive glare.

The result depends on your existing glass, window size and exposure. We show you samples directly on your window so you can see the difference before choosing. You decide which light level feels right.

Fix my heat problem

Can I block heat without changing how my windows look?

Yes. Spectrally selective films like Clear View Plus 70 reflect about 8% of visible light, close to ordinary glass, while blocking a lot of infrared.

This is the go-to option for heritage facades, condos with appearance rules or anyone who simply doesn't want a tinted look. The view and appearance stay almost the same, but the room is more comfortable.

Fix my heat problem

Does window film help my air conditioning?

Yes. By reducing the solar heat coming through the windows, film lowers the load on your AC in sun-exposed rooms.

The effect is strongest in rooms with a lot of south or west facing glass. The exact savings depend on your building, your system and how you use it, so we don't promise a percentage. What we see most often is more even comfort from room to room.

Fix my heat problem

Can window film be installed on skylights?

Yes, film can be suitable for a skylight and reduce the heat or glare it lets in. The choice depends on the material, glazing construction and access.

Skylights need a specific assessment: some projects require exterior film or manufacturer approval. We confirm the suitable solution and warranty coverage before installation. A photo, dimensions and any available glass information help us start the assessment.

Fix my heat problem

Is window film a cheaper alternative to replacing windows for heat?

Yes. If your windows are in good shape and the problem is heat or glare, film fixes it for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

Replacing a window makes sense when the frame is damaged, the sealed unit has failed or air is leaking in. If the glass is still good, film improves its performance with no construction, no permit and a single visit.

Fix my heat problem

Does window film reduce hot spots near windows?

Yes. Spots where the sun hits the floor or a desk directly get much less hot, because part of the solar energy is rejected before it gets in.

That's often what makes a corner of the living room or a workstation unusable in the afternoon. By cutting direct heat, film makes those spaces comfortable without moving furniture or closing the blinds.

Fix my heat problem

UV and fading

Does window film block UV rays?

Yes. XPEL Vision solar and security films block 99% of UV rays according to the manufacturer's data, including clear versions.

You can protect your interiors without choosing a dark tint. For decorative finishes, we check the selected product's performance if UV protection is one of your priorities. Tell us what you want to protect, and we will recommend a suitable film.

Protect my floors and furniture

Don't my windows already block UV?

Only partly. Ordinary glass stops most UVB but lets a good share of UVA through, the rays that fade materials and penetrate skin.

Some newer glass, like laminated glass or certain low-E glass, blocks more UV, but performance varies a lot from window to window. Film gives you known, consistent protection on every treated window.

Protect my floors and furniture

Will window film stop my floors and furniture from fading?

Window film slows sun-related fading, but it cannot eliminate it completely. By filtering UV and, depending on the product, some light and heat, it helps protect floors, furniture and fabrics.

The right choice depends on the materials and their exposure. For hardwood beside a large window or a sofa in direct sun, we look for the best balance of protection and daylight. You keep a welcoming room while reducing your belongings' exposure.

Protect my floors and furniture

Does window film protect artwork?

Yes. UV-filtering film can help protect artwork, photographs and textiles exposed to daylight. Visible light also contributes to deterioration, so protection needs to account for the full exposure.

Keep valuable artwork out of direct sunlight and use suitable lighting. We help you choose a film that reduces exposure while preserving the room's atmosphere. Any specialist conservation needs can then be reviewed with an art conservator.

Protect my floors and furniture

Does window film protect skin from UV indoors?

Yes. A film rated for 99% UV rejection greatly reduces UV passing through the treated glass, which is useful when you spend a lot of time beside a window.

That is a benefit for a home office, waiting room or sunny reading area, even with a clear film. We explain the selected product's performance. If you have photosensitivity or a specific medical condition, your healthcare professional can advise on your protection needs.

Protect my floors and furniture

Will my plants still grow behind window film?

In most cases, yes. Plants mainly need visible light, and clear films let most of it through.

Plants that need a lot of light may need some time to adjust, especially with a darker film. If you have many plants near a window, tell us: we'll choose a film that keeps as much visible light as possible.

Protect my floors and furniture

Glare

How do I reduce glare on my TV or computer screen?

A film that cuts visible light reduces glare at the source, without closing the blinds. Depending on the XPEL Vision product, glare reduction ranges from about 15% to over 90%.

The right level depends on the room. For a home office or living room, a moderate reduction is often enough to make the screen readable while keeping the room bright. The figures come from the manufacturer's spec sheet; we show you samples so you can judge on site.

Reduce my glare

How do I cut glare in an office without blinds?

A solar control film reduces glare on every window, all the time, without each employee having to manage a blind.

In open offices, blinds often end up closed all day, which cuts natural light for everyone. A well-chosen film keeps the view and light while making screens readable. It also cuts heat, which helps workstations near windows.

Reduce my glare

Will anti-glare film make the room dark?

It reduces light, that's what cuts the glare, but you choose the level. A moderate reduction removes the discomfort without making the room feel dark.

Your eyes adjust quickly to a slightly less bright room, especially once the glare is gone. If you're worried about losing too much light, we start with a lighter film and show you the difference on your window before installing.

Reduce my glare

What film reduces glare on classroom smartboards?

A solar film that cuts part of the visible light makes smartboards and projections readable without darkening the classroom.

South or west facing classrooms often get both glare and heat late in the day. The same film fixes both and blocks 99% of UV. For schools, we usually schedule installation during breaks or summer so classes aren't disrupted.

Reduce my glare

Glare film or solar shades: which should I choose?

Film works all the time and keeps the view clear. Solar shades are adjustable, but the view is filtered when they're down and they need upkeep.

In many spaces, film is enough and the shades become unnecessary. Where you need full darkness at certain times, like a screening room, the two work well together: film handles heat and glare every day, and shades are used only when needed.

Reduce my glare

Winter and energy

Does window film help in winter?

A low-E film does. XPEL's All Season Intelligence 65 reflects part of the indoor heat back into the room in winter, while blocking solar heat in summer.

Most solar films are designed for summer. A low-emissivity film adds an insulating effect during the cold season, which matters in Montreal. According to the XPEL spec sheet, All Season Intelligence 65 has an emissivity of 0.09 and keeps about 66% of visible light.

Tell us about your windows

Can window film keep heat in?

Yes. Low-emissivity, or low-E, film can reduce some heat loss through glass and improve comfort near windows in winter.

The benefit depends on the existing window, especially if it already has a low-E coating. We check the glazing before recommending this option. For windows in good condition, it is a way to improve performance without a full replacement.

Tell us about your windows

What is low-E window film?

It's a film with a layer that reflects radiant heat. In winter it sends heat back into the room; in summer it helps block the sun's heat.

Emissivity measures how easily a surface lets heat escape. The lower the number, the better the surface holds heat. Ordinary glass has high emissivity; XPEL's All Season Intelligence 65 is at 0.09 according to its spec sheet, which makes it a four season film.

Tell us about your windows

Does window film lower energy bills?

It can, mainly air conditioning in summer and, with a low-E film, part of the heating in winter. Real savings depend on your building.

The number of windows, their orientation, the glass type and your heating and cooling system all change the result. Rather than promise a percentage, we explain what film changes in your case. For commercial projects, we can provide technical data to your engineer or energy consultant.

Tell us about your windows

Does window film fix drafts or condensation?

No. Drafts come from seals and frames, and condensation comes mostly from indoor humidity or a failed sealed unit. Film fixes neither.

If you feel cold air around the window, look at caulking and weatherstripping. If you see fog between the two panes of a sealed unit, the seal has failed and the glass needs replacing. We'll tell you that straight during the assessment rather than install a film that won't solve the problem.

Tell us about your windows

Can window film be installed in winter in Montreal?

Yes. Interior film can be installed in winter in a heated building when the glass temperature is suitable. You do not need to wait until summer to improve privacy or comfort.

Exterior installations are scheduled around the weather and the product's requirements. Cold conditions can also extend drying time after installation. We confirm the right installation timing and aftercare for your windows.

Tell us about your windows

Can window film help with LEED or building energy goals?

It can contribute to an energy efficiency and visual comfort strategy, but it doesn't earn LEED points on its own. It depends on how your project is assessed.

Films improve values like solar heat gain coefficient, glare and UV protection. We provide XPEL spec sheets and performance data to your LEED consultant or engineer so they can include them in their calculations.

Safety and security

What is security window film?

Security film is a strong film that helps hold fragments together when glass breaks. It can also make it harder to pass through a damaged pane.

The right choice depends on the goal: reducing glass-fragment hazards, protecting an entrance or delaying intrusion. Thickness matters, along with the glazing, frame and attachment. We assess the complete installation to recommend a suitable solution.

Secure my glass

Does security film make glass shatterproof?

No. Security film does not make glass unbreakable. It helps hold fragments together after breakage and can make the opening harder to pass through.

It adds protection to entrances, storefronts and glass exposed to impacts. To improve how broken glass is retained in its frame, a project may also need a suitable attachment system. We explain what the proposed solution can do before installation.

Secure my glass

Can security film stop a break-in?

Security film can delay a break-in by making broken glass harder to pass through. It adds a barrier without guaranteeing that entry is impossible.

Performance depends on the glass, frame, film and attachment. When the project calls for it, Privé can arrange a frame attachment system to complement the protection. We assess your entrance or storefront and recommend a solution that works alongside your locks and alarm.

Secure my glass

Does security film hold glass together if it breaks?

Yes. Holding glass fragments together is the main function of security film. This helps limit scattered shards after an impact.

Whether the broken pane stays in its frame also depends on the glazing and attachment system. For entrances, schools and businesses, we select the solution around its use and the protection required. Broken glazing still needs to be made safe and replaced.

Secure my glass

Is security film bulletproof?

No. No film applied to an ordinary window makes it bulletproof. Bullet resistant glass is a completely different product.

Security film is designed to hold glass together and delay an intrusion, not to stop a projectile. If someone offers you "bulletproof" film for a standard window, that's a promise it can't keep.

Secure my glass

Is security film visible?

Barely. XPEL Vision clear security films let about 88% to 89% of visible light through, according to the manufacturer's spec sheet.

From outside and inside, the window keeps its normal look. If you also want privacy or solar control, there are tinted or reflective security versions.

Secure my glass

What is anti-graffiti film?

It's a clear film applied to storefronts and glass doors. If someone scratches, etches or tags the glass, we replace the film instead of the glass.

Etching and scratch vandalism is hard to remove from glass and expensive to fix. Anti-graffiti film acts as a sacrificial layer that costs far less to change than a storefront pane. It's nearly invisible and also blocks the UV that fades merchandise.

Secure my glass

Can security film be combined with heat control or privacy?

Yes. XPEL offers security films that also include solar control, in clear, neutral or reflective versions.

This is useful when one window has several problems, for example a sunny glass entrance or a ground floor classroom. One film handles security, heat and UV, and a reflective version adds daytime privacy.

Secure my glass

Birds

Why do birds keep hitting my windows?

Birds don't see glass. They see either the reflection of sky and trees, or the plants and light on the other side, and they try to fly through.

It happens more near woods, parks and feeders, and during spring and fall migration. Large windows, glass corners and windows facing each other are most at risk. If a bird has hit once, others will likely hit the same spot.

Stop bird strikes

How do I stop birds from hitting my windows?

Reducing collisions means making the glass visible to birds. A regular pattern across the window is more useful than a few isolated decals.

A solution such as XPEL Bird Safe Dotted adds visual markers while preserving much of the daylight. Placement matters as much as the pattern, usually on the exterior surface to address reflections. Send us photos of the affected windows, and we will help you identify which ones to treat first.

Stop bird strikes

What is bird-safe window film?

It is a film that adds a visible pattern to glass to help birds recognize the barrier. XPEL Bird Safe Dotted uses a dotted pattern and transmits about 88% of visible light.

It provides a durable treatment for existing glazing, with markers distributed across the surface. We check access, reflections and installation requirements before recommending the solution. You can view a sample to judge its appearance from inside.

Stop bird strikes

Is bird-safe film visible from inside?

Yes, the dots are visible from inside, especially up close. The pattern is designed to make glass noticeable to birds while retaining daylight and a view outside.

The appearance depends on your distance from the window and the background. A sample on your own glass is the easiest way to judge it from where you normally sit or work.

Stop bird strikes

Smart film

What is smart (switchable) privacy film?

Smart film switches between frosted and clear with an electrical control. It gives privacy on demand, but it needs power, wiring and a product suited to the window, so frosted film is the simpler choice for most spaces.

Not every smart film can go on a window facing outside. Temperature limits, sun exposure, edge sealing and the warranty all need checking, especially in a Quebec climate. Privé doesn't install smart film. For bathrooms, offices, meeting rooms and street-facing windows, we recommend frosted film: privacy day and night, no power, no upkeep, and the room stays bright.

Find the right privacy option

Smart film or frosted film: which should I choose?

For most spaces, frosted film. It gives constant privacy day and night, with no power or wiring, and it costs far less to install and maintain.

Smart film only makes sense if you truly need to switch between a clear view and full privacy several times a day, and you accept the wiring and higher cost. For a bathroom, office, meeting room or street-facing window, frosted film does the job simply. A frosted band at eye level can also keep part of the view open. We bring samples so you can see the result on your own glass.

Find the right privacy option

Durability and care

How long does window film last?

Quality architectural window film installed indoors and properly maintained can last around 20 years, sometimes longer. For exterior installations, weather exposure has a greater influence on service life.

Glass type, sun exposure and care all affect its service life. XPEL's manufacturer warranty also varies by film and use, with limited lifetime coverage available for certain residential installations. We explain the selected product's coverage before installation.

Tell us about your project

How does window film age?

Quality film is designed to retain its clarity, colour and adhesion for years. How it ages depends on the product, installation, exposure and care.

If an older film becomes cloudy, changes colour or starts peeling, we can assess it and recommend replacement. That gives you clearer-looking glass and the chance to choose a different performance level: more light, greater privacy or better solar control.

Tell us about your project

Why does old window film turn purple or green?

Heat and sunlight can affect the dyes or other layers in an older film, changing its colour over time. Some finishes are more colour-stable than others.

A purple or green tint does not mean you need a new window. We can remove the film, clean the glass and install a product with the appearance and performance you want today. Send us a photo to start the assessment.

Tell us about your project

Why does old window film bubble or peel?

Bubbles appearing in an older film or lifting edges can indicate adhesion loss or deterioration. Age, heat, glass preparation and maintenance can all contribute.

That is different from the small water pockets that can occur immediately after installation and disappear during drying. If film starts lifting after years in place, send us photos and we can advise on assessment or replacement.

Tell us about your project

How do I clean windows with film on them?

Generally, wait 30 days after installation before the first cleaning, then use a soft microfibre cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaning solution. We provide care instructions for your specific film.

Apply the solution to the cloth and wipe gently. Avoid blades, scouring pads and harsh chemicals. If drying takes longer, particularly in cold conditions or with thicker film, follow the timing provided at installation.

Tell us about your project

Does window film scratch?

Window film generally has a coating that resists everyday scratches, but sharp objects or abrasive cleaning can still mark it.

A clean microfibre cloth and gentle care help preserve its appearance. For a door or storefront exposed to frequent contact, we choose the product around its use; anti-graffiti film may also be appropriate. Damaged film can be replaced without replacing the glass when the pane remains intact.

Tell us about your project

Can window film be removed?

Yes. A professional can remove the film and clean away the adhesive. On glass in good condition, this can generally be done without damaging the pane.

The method depends on the surface and the film's age. Older, brittle film may take longer to remove. We assess its condition first, then either leave the glass clear or install a new film.

Tell us about your project

Can you remove old film and install new film?

Yes. We remove the old film and adhesive, then prepare the glass for the new film. It is a useful way to replace a faded, damaged or unsuitable film.

Mention any existing film when you contact us and include a few photos. Removal can then be planned and priced in the quote, so you know the project cost before installation.

Tell us about your project

Windows and warranty

Can window film crack my windows?

Film that is unsuitable for the glazing can increase the risk of thermal-stress cracking. That is why product selection needs to account for the window itself.

We check the glass, dimensions, condition and sun exposure before recommending a film. Some combinations require specific approval. We also explain the manufacturer coverage that applies to your installation before the work begins.

Get my windows assessed

Will window film void my window warranty?

It depends on your window manufacturer. Some warranties exclude damage associated with added film, so the glazing warranty should be checked before installation.

The film has its own manufacturer warranty, separate from the window warranty. We help you check compatibility and understand the coverage for your project. If your windows are recent, send us the brand or available product information with your request.

Get my windows assessed

Can film be installed on double-pane windows?

Yes. A compatible film can be installed on a sealed double-pane glass unit. The choice needs to account for the window's construction and condition.

An existing low-E coating, the size of the pane and its sun exposure all affect the recommendation. We check these details before selecting a film to improve comfort or privacy while meeting the glazing requirements.

Can film go on older windows?

Yes, if the glass is in good condition. Film is often a good way to upgrade older windows without replacing them.

We check the condition of the glass, seals and sealed unit. If a unit is fogged between the panes or the frame is damaged, we'll tell you: film won't fix that, and it's better to replace the glass first.

What warranty comes with window film?

The film comes with an XPEL manufacturer warranty. Depending on the product and use, coverage can extend to 15 years commercially or a limited lifetime for eligible residential installations.

Decorative and exterior products have different terms. We identify the applicable warranty with the recommended film.

What does the warranty cover exactly?

The manufacturer warranty covers eligible film defects, such as peeling, bubbling or delamination. Certain installations also qualify for limited thermal-breakage and seal-failure coverage.

The written terms specify durations, exclusions and limits for the product and glazing.

Interior or exterior film: which is right?

Interior installation is the standard: the film is protected from weather and lasts longer. Exterior installation is used when the inside isn't accessible or the glass type requires it.

An exterior film can also be chosen to reject heat before it enters the glass, which lowers thermal stress risk on some double-pane units. It needs mild temperatures to install. We recommend one or the other after seeing your glass.

Installation

How is window film installed?

We deep clean the glass, apply an installation solution, lay the film, position it, then squeegee out the water and air. Edges are trimmed precisely along the frame.

Glass prep is the most important step: a missed speck of dust becomes a permanent flaw. We protect sills and floors while we work. Once installed, the film dries over the following days.

How long does installation take?

Installation is quick: generally, allow a few minutes to around 40 minutes per window, depending on its size, configuration and the film selected. Very large panes or more challenging installations may take longer.

Preparation, access and any old-film removal also affect the total appointment time. Many residential projects are completed in one visit. We provide a project-specific estimate so you can easily plan your day.

Do I need to be home during installation?

Someone needs to give us access to the windows, at least at the start and the end. While we work, you can go about your day.

For shops and offices, we can schedule outside business hours. For schools, we usually work during breaks or summer.

Is there a mess or smell during installation?

Very little. Installation uses a water-based solution with no strong odor, and we protect the surfaces around the windows.

We need a bit of room in front of each window, so we ask you to move furniture and items away from the glass. We leave the space clean.

Why does the film look hazy or have water spots after installation?

A slight haze or small water pockets can be normal immediately after installation. Moisture remains beneath the film and gradually clears as it dries.

Drying time varies with the product, film thickness and glass temperature. Do not puncture water pockets, and wait until the recommended cleaning date. If a mark concerns you or remains beyond the expected drying period, send us a photo and we will advise whether it needs checking.

Can I install window film myself?

For a small decorative window, it's possible. For double-pane units, large panes or solar and security films, professional installation avoids bubbles, rough edges and thermal stress risk.

Hardware store films aren't the same as professional architectural films. A professional install also includes the glass assessment and the warranty. When a DIY job goes wrong, the film often has to come off and the work starts over.

What happens during the free assessment?

The assessment starts with your goal: more privacy, less heat or glare, or better glass protection. A few photos and approximate measurements are often enough to prepare an initial recommendation.

When a visit is needed, we assess the glazing and show you the options on site. You receive a free quote, generally within 24 hours once we have the necessary information. We confirm the solution around your window and the result you want.

Can you install film on high or hard-to-reach windows?

Yes, in most cases. High windows, double-height entrances and skylights are common in our projects.

Access affects how we work and the price, for example if scaffolding or a lift is needed. We assess it on site or from photos and include it clearly in the quote.

Cost and quotes

How much does window film cost in Montreal?

The installed price of window film in Montreal depends on the glass area, product and window access. For your project cost, send us a few photos and approximate measurements: the quote is free, with no obligation.

A small frosted window, patio door and security storefront require different work. We provide a price for your windows, generally within 24 hours of receiving the necessary details. Old-film removal or special access is accounted for in the quote when applicable.

What affects the price of window film?

Five factors: total glass area, film type, the number and shape of windows, access (height, scaffolding) and removing old film if there is any.

Thick security films and low-E films cost more than standard solar or frosted films. Many small windows take more labor than one large pane of the same total size. We break these down in the quote.

Is window film worth it?

If you have a specific heat, privacy, glare, fading or security problem, yes: film fixes it without replacing the windows, in a single visit.

It's less worth it if your windows need replacing anyway, for example because of a fogged sealed unit or a damaged frame. We'll tell you during the assessment. Our job is to solve the problem, not to put film everywhere.

Window film or replacing windows: which costs less?

Film costs a fraction of the price of replacing windows, with no construction and no manufacturing lead time.

Replacement is still the right option when the window itself is at the end of its life. But if the glass is in good shape and your problem is heat, privacy or glare, film gets you the result for much less.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Yes. Send us a photo of each window, approximate measurements and what you want to improve. We can often prepare a quote from that information.

Include your city, any access challenges and whether old film is already installed. You generally receive your quote within 24 hours once we have the necessary details. If the glazing or project requires an on-site check, we explain that before confirming the solution.

By type of space

Can window film be installed in a condo? Do I need board approval?

Yes, window film can be installed in a condo. First check your condo declaration and board rules covering the glazing and exterior appearance.

A clear, low-reflectivity film may suit a project where keeping the facade discreet matters. If approval is needed, we can provide technical sheets and samples for the board. That lets you move the project forward with a specific proposal.

What film works for a home office?

Usually a film that cuts screen glare and afternoon heat without darkening the room.

If the office faces the street or a neighbour, we can add privacy with a reflective film or a frosted band. The goal: work all day without closing the blinds or squinting at your screen.

What films work for offices and commercial buildings?

Typical needs are heat and glare at workstations, privacy for meeting rooms and security for glass entrances.

We can treat a floor, a facade or just the problem areas. For an occupied building, we schedule installation outside working hours or in sections. We provide the spec sheets building managers, engineers and consultants need.

What film works for a storefront?

For a storefront, clear, low-reflectivity film can reduce heat and UV while keeping merchandise visible from the street. The choice depends on exposure and the appearance you want.

Anti-graffiti film can also protect the glass surface. To conceal a storage area or incorporate a design that reflects your brand, send us a photo of the storefront and your idea, and we will explore the options with you.

What window films work for schools?

Schools can use film to reduce heat and glare, add privacy and improve glass-fragment retention after breakage. Different areas of the building may need different solutions.

For intrusion delay, we assess the glazing, frame and attachment requirements. Frosted coverage is planned around the school's privacy and visibility needs. We can schedule work during breaks and provide technical sheets to help prepare the project.

What films work for clinics and healthcare offices?

The main need is confidentiality: frost on exam rooms, offices and glass doors so patients can't be seen from outside or the hallway.

Frost keeps rooms bright, which matters in a care space. We can also cut heat and glare in waiting rooms and protect workstations from UV. For a ground floor unit, frost gives privacy that holds day and night.

What films work for a restaurant?

For a restaurant, the right film improves comfort at window-side tables while preserving the view and atmosphere. We adjust solar and glare control to the exposure.

A low-reflectivity finish helps keep the dining room visible from the street. For a more private section, decorative pattern or branded design idea, tell us about your project and we will help you find a solution for the glass.

Can a renter install window film?

Yes, with the landlord's approval. Since film can be removed without damaging the glass, many landlords agree.

Get written permission before installation. If you move, a professional can remove the film. Many renters choose frost or a clear solar film, which barely change how the building looks.

About Privé

Who installs window film in Montreal?

Privé Window Films is an XPEL Vision certified installer doing residential, commercial and institutional window film across Greater Montreal.

Whoever you choose, ask three questions: are they certified by the manufacturer, do they assess your glass type before recommending a film, and do they give you a written warranty? Those three things are the difference between an install that lasts and one that has to be redone.

Contact Privé

Why choose a certified installer?

Because install quality matters as much as the film. A certified installer is trained by the manufacturer, uses professional products and offers a warranty that holds.

The most common problems, like bubbles, rough edges, dust under the film or thermal stress breakage, almost always come from the install or the wrong product choice. Certification doesn't guarantee everything, but it greatly reduces those risks.

Contact Privé

What brand of film do you use?

We install the XPEL Vision architectural line: solar, privacy, decorative, security, anti-graffiti, bird-safe and low-E films.

Having a manufacturer's full line lets us pick the right film for each window, with published performance data and a manufacturer warranty. We show you spec sheets and samples during the assessment.

What areas do you serve?

Privé serves Greater Montreal, including Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Lambert, Boucherville, Terrebonne, Repentigny and Blainville.
